Nassau Cruise Port is one of the most visited cruise destinations in the Caribbean, yet it may also be one of the most debated.
If you’ve spent any time reading cruise forums or Facebook groups, you’ve probably seen the same question asked repeatedly:
“Should we even get off the ship in Nassau?”
When our Disney cruise arrived at the Nassau Cruise Port, Nancy and I decided to find out for ourselves. Instead of booking an excursion, we spent several hours exploring Nassau on foot to see what was actually worth our limited time ashore.
What we discovered wasn’t exactly what we expected.
Nassau Cruise Port: Exploring Nassau On Your Own
Before arriving in Nassau, we weren’t sure how easy it would be to explore independently.
Many cruise ports almost require an excursion, taxi, or organized transportation to see anything interesting.
Nassau surprised us.
Several attractions, historic sites, hotels, beaches, and landmarks were within walking distance of the cruise port. For cruise passengers who enjoy exploring at their own pace, Nassau turned out to be far more walkable than we expected.
That alone changed our opinion of the port almost immediately.
Nassau Cruise Port Attractions That Surprised Us Most
Every cruise stop seems to have one place that exceeds expectations.
For us, Nassau had more than one.
One location in particular became one of our favorite discoveries of the entire morning. Another stop delivered a completely different atmosphere than we expected and gave us a side of Nassau we had not anticipated seeing.
Neither was among the attractions we had originally been most excited about.
Sometimes the best discoveries happen when travel doesn’t go exactly according to plan.
Nassau Cruise Port History Beyond The Beaches
Many cruise passengers associate Nassau primarily with beaches, shopping, and excursions.
While those options certainly exist, we found ourselves enjoying some of Nassau’s historic sites just as much.
Several locations helped us better understand the island’s history and culture, while one attraction became the highlight of our entire visit.
If you enjoy architecture, photography, history, or simply experiencing a destination beyond its tourist shops, Nassau offers more variety than many cruise passengers realize.
The Nassau Cruise Port Mistake We’d Avoid Next Time
No travel day is perfect.
Looking back, we made one mistake that affected part of our morning.
The good news is that it would be very easy to avoid on a future visit.
There was also one stop we initially skipped that later made us wonder whether we had made the wrong decision.
If our cruise returned tomorrow, we’d make a few changes to our route that would probably improve the experience even more.
Would We Leave The Ship Again?
After spending several hours exploring Nassau, our answer is yes.
We found Nassau more comfortable, more walkable, and more interesting than we expected.
We enjoyed the combination of history, architecture, local culture, and waterfront scenery. We also discovered a few surprises that completely changed our opinion of Nassau as a cruise destination.
That doesn’t mean every attraction will appeal to every traveler.
But if you’re wondering whether the Nassau Cruise Port is worth exploring on your own, we believe there are enough worthwhile experiences nearby to justify leaving the ship.
